iPhone 6 Patent Filing Shows Wraparound Screen, Confirms Use of Liquidmetal
Reports have for some time suggested that iPhone 6 will feature a curved display, but evidence is gathering that we could be looking at something very different than anything we’ve seen to date.
Rather than a simple arc to the screen as presented by the Samsung Galaxy Round and the LG G Flex, a new patent filing tips an iPhone with a stunning wrap-around screen. Or in other words, a Smartphone that uses flexible display technology to create a touchscreen that bends right around the edges and the sides of the device.
Should the patent come to fruition in the form of a future iPhone, we could be looking at the first device with a touchscreen that goes all the way around the device and allows for touch commands to be made anywhere on the handset. The patent filing suggests that the very top and bottom edges of the device would remain non-touch, but the rest of the phone would essentially become one huge touchscreen.
I know – we can only hope advancements are also being made in fingerprint prevention, but still…
Other than the wrap-around touchscreen that could change the shape of the Smartphone industry forever…quite literally…the iPhone 6 is rumored to pack many of the same component as the iPhone 5S – including its M7 graphics chip, 64-bit A7 processor and the same Touch ID fingerprint reader.
In terms of launch date estimates, the iPhone 5S and 5C alike are both performing so strongly that even if the iPhone 6 was to be release-ready by the summer of next year, chances are Apple will hold it back until the usual fall refresh schedule.
On the plus side, we may well have Apple’s first iWatch and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro to play with in the meantime – both of which are expected to arrive much closer to the summer months.
